New Delhi : Geological Survey of India, the 170-year-old premier Geological organisation of the country has signed an MoU with Geological Survey of Finland called GTK, which is a leading European competence centre on the assessment and sustainable use of geological resources.
The MoU was signed between Dr. Ranjit Rath, Director General, Geological Survey of India and Mr. Mika Nykanen, Director General, GTK Finland during a virtual conference to collaborate in the various aspects of Geology and Mineral Resource exploration and management.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Rath said that this collaboration with GTK will benefit both the organisations especially in the fields of mineral exploration, geo-scientific data repository, landslide hazards and its mitigation process. He also pointed out that the Finnish counterparts can help GSI in their study and researches in the discipline of Glaciology through their expertise built over decades of work in this domain due to their natural geographical proximity to the North Pole. GTK and GSI will help each other through an exchange programme in the sphere of training and capacity building.
Mr. Mika Nykanen, Director General of GTK Finland was happy to partner with an organisation like the Geological Survey of India in its various fields of work and hoped that this synergy between the two organisations would bear fruits which would be mutually beneficial.
After the signing of the MoU, scientists from both the organisations presented their research on various subjects. From the GSI side Dr. Saibal Ghosh gave a presentation on the Role GSI plays as a nodal agency for landslide studies in India. Shri Dattatreya S. Jeere gave an overview of Mineral Exploration in India being carried out by GSI and corresponding Geoscience Research Challenges & Opportunities. Shri B.K. Sahu gave a presentation on Airborne Geophysical Surveys in India and Shri Biswajit Gangopadhyay presented on International Training and Capacity Building. From GTK a presentation on Geodata Management was given by Ms. Niina Ahtonen. A presentation on Mineral Prospectivity Modelling was given by Ms. Bijal Chudasama. Mr. Jussi Ahonen’s presentation was on Managed Aquifer Recharge and Mr Juoko Nieminen presented on Mineral processing, isotope geology and mine environment and circular economy.
