New Bedford MA:  Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) alumni Emily Westgate was recently profiled for her success by the Jacobs Family Scholarship Program.

Westgate received the Jacobs Scholarship in 2011 as a student at the Global Learning Charter Public School. She continued her education at Brown University to study Public Health with a focus on social determinants of health and an emphasis on the role of education on childhood health and wellbeing. Westgate’s professional work experience includes work with governmental health agencies, non-profit organizations, and corporate health agencies. She now works for New Bedford Public Schools as the Curriculum, Data, and Assessment Manager for Health, Physical Education, and Wellness. Through her work with New Bedford Public Schools, she promotes the interconnectedness of health, education, and overall well-being for students.

Emily remains a resident of New Bedford.  The Jacobs Family Scholarship award is for $35,000 over four years and is awarded to a New Bedford student who is pursuing a STEAM education degree.

“We congratulate Emily for her outstanding career and her commitment to New Bedford,” said Dr. Stephen Furtado, Executive Director of GLPCS.  “It is always gratifying to see our alumni come back and share their education and talents in our community.”

GLCPS is currently undertaking an $8 million capital campaign to fund the renovation of a historic building located at 106 Bullard Street in New Bedford creating “One School, One Campus.”
