  • Govt. slashes MEP on onions to $ 450 per tonne

    Published on March 2, 2011

In a major relief for exporters, the government has slashed the minimum export price (MEP) for onions by 25 per cent to 450 US dollar per tonne from earlier 600 US dollar per tonne. In a notification, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said, the slashed MEP of onions will not apply to Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram onions.

Last month, the government had lifted the ban on onion exports after farmers’ protested a crash in domestic prices. But it restricted overseas sales by capping the MEP at 600 US dollar per tonne as a precautionary measure to control local price.
