Guwahati : India and Bangladesh want to boost ties in areas of defence, trade and connectivity.CMO Government sources said the focus of the talks was to significantly expand the areas of cooperation between the two countries.The first Indo-Bangladesh stakeholder meeting ended today on a positive note with a set of recommendations, including the development of border infrastructure and addressing trade barriers, as the two neighbors expanded bilateral trade, economic cooperation and connectivity Vowed to continue the engagement for carry forward good beginning unleashed by the India-Bangladesh Stakeholders’ Meet for Trade and Connectivity, both Assam and Bangladesh vowed to work on the areas like garment industry, health tourism, IT and education sector among others for the mutual benefits of both the geographical territories.

Holding a meeting with the Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and his delegation on the sidelines of the India-Bangladesh Stakeholders’ Meet at Janata Bhawan today, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the government is committed to enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries.Hailing Sonowal’s bold leadership, Munshi said Assam and Bangladesh should work to strengthen the economic ties. He said that of late the political relations between India and Bangladesh has turned into business ties and considering the geographical proximity of Assam with Bangladesh, both the entities should open up to feed the business needs of the people. Sonowal stating the age-old communication ties, harped on restoring the trade links between Assam and Bangladesh. He said that the ports in Bangladesh need to be linked with Assam through Brahmaputra-Barak-Padma-Meghna riverine waterways to facilitate economic growth of the region. He also outlined the need of restoring rail connectivity between North East and Bangladesh. Sonowal also vouched for speedy implementation of agreements, which would ensure access to Chattogram and Mongla Ports of Bangladesh for the North East, and execution of the BBIN motor vehicle agreement. He also stated that unless there is a seamless connectivity between Assam and Bangladesh any joint ventures would not be successful. Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said that similar Meet will also be organised in Bangladesh to facilitate Business to Business, Business to Consumer, Business to Government, Government to Consumer interaction. Chief Minister Sonowal later met a 14-member delegation of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry at his office. The delegation led by Senior Vice President Waqar Ahmed Choudhury talked to the Chief Minister on the increasing demand for a robust business relation between Assam and Bangladesh.Ties between the two countries have been on an upswing in the last few years.
