I Want You Back actor Charlie Day talks playing the lead in the rom-com for the very first time

Get ready for a whole lot of laughs as Amazon Prime Video dropped its romantic comedy I Want You Back on the service today. The film, starring Charlie Day and Jenny Slate in the lead, has received a thumbs up from the audience and critics across the globe for its light-hearted and fresh take on adult relationships.

The film is about two strangers who on meeting realise that they have been dumped by their partners on the same day. The duo strikes a deal to get back with their respective exes when they realise that their ex-partners have happily moved on. Talking about the film’s storyline, Charlie Day says, “We strike a deal—a very innocent deal at first that any time we’re sad, we call each other instead of our exes. But then we double down on that, realizing we can use each other to break up our exes’ new relationships and get them back.”

Charlie Day has starred in more than a dozen films, but I Want You Back marks his first romantic comedy lead. “I was thrilled to be in a romantic comedy because I’m such a fan of so many of them. I loved this script and the structure of the story and thought it would be a great thing to be a part of. And it was exciting for me to play a more grounded, well-rounded human being,” says Charlie.

I Want You Back is directed by Jason Orley, who is known for his work such as Big Time Adolescence. While praising Jason, Charlie says, “I saw Big Time Adolescence and loved it. And I was blown away by Jason’s work on this film. He did a great job maintaining the tone, so we could do something really funny, but it still exists within the same movie where you also have very grounded emotional moments. I think he’s fantastic, and we’re going to see a lot of great movies from him.”

I Want You Back stars Charlie Day along with Jenny Slate, Scott Eastwood, Manny Jacinto, Chak  Backo and Gina Rodrigues. Directed by Jason Orley, the film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
