  • IMD predicts heavy rainfall in next 2 days

    In Goa, the met department has forecast ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall in the state over the weekend, and the downpour is likely to continue till Monday.

    The weather department had earlier issued a red alert of extremely heavy rainfall for Friday for the state.

    The IMD on its website has carried  ‘most vigil’ warning for Saturday with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy precipitations at isolated places.

    The forecaster has also issued a ‘be aware’ alert for Sunday and Monday, as  heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to occur at isolated places.

    The monsoon will be fully active in the next three or four days.

    The conditions are likely to prevail off Konkan and Goa coasts till June 12.

    Mumbai received a fresh round of rainfall today, following the onset of the southwest monsoon on June 9, leaving streets water-logged in several parts of the city. Flight and local train services are witnessing delay due to weather conditions.

    City’s civic body, BMC senior officials, including deputy municipal commissioners, assistant commissioners and heads of departments will continue to work over the weekend.

    According to met department, rainfall intensity is expected to reduce by tomorrow.

    Along the Konkan coast, people have been told avoid outdoor activities from June 9 to 11. Fishermen have also been warned to not venture out into the sea.

    Teams of national disaster response force, equipped with walkie-talkie and flood rescue material, have been stationed at Parel, Mankhurd and Andheri.

    Rain accompanied by strong winds also hit parts of Mangalore city of Karnataka. Rains which are being witnessed since yesterday, made Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district administrations declare holiday for yesterday and today.

    Widespread power outages at various parts of the city, due to trees being uprooted or branches falling over electric lines, was reported.

    According to met department, warning of heavy to very heavy rain continues till June 13.
