Guwahati: India’s anti-terror agency NIA conducted raids at 17 different places in Assam throughout the night on Sunday. Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency also arrested an absconding Naxalite in Cachar district. The NIA took the action in connection with the spread of ‘Maoist’ network.

The anti-terror agency carried out searches in Cachar, Karimganj, Dibrugarh and Dhubri districts of Assam. A senior NIA official said in Guwahati today that maoists have secretly made their base in Assam. Last month, top Maoist leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharya alias Kanchan Dako was arrested from Patimara along with state committee member Akash Orang alias Rahul from a tea garden in Cachar district. Soon after, it was revealed that maoists were secretly active in Assam. During this time, a couple of couple were arrested on charges of having suspected links with the Maoist group.

Raju Orang and his wife Pinky Orang of Sonakhira area have reportedly been detained by the NIA from their houses. Meanwhile, police have also arrested a Maoist member in Dibrugarh district after the couple was detained. Reema Orang alias Saraswati, an absconding accused in the case, has also been arrested from Dibrugarh district of Assam during the raid. The NIA has claimed to have seized some digital devices and incriminating documents of the CPI-Maoist party during the searches. The case pertains to the arrest of CPI(M) Central Committee member and Naxal leader Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias Kanchan Da and CPI (Maoist) Assam State Organising Committee member Akash Orang alias Kajal.

The duo was arrested on March 6, 2022 from Patimara tea garden under Udaiband police station of Cachar district. The National Investigation Agency had said after the arrest of the duo that the accused persons, along with their associates, were involved in an attempt to spread the Maoist network in Assam and the north-eastern region of the country. Initially, the case was registered at the Panbazar Crime Branch police station of Guwahati, Kamrup (Metro) in Assam. After this, on March 16, the NIA had re-registered it and started the investigation. An important point is that the Maoists have formed networks, especially in the tea garden areas. The arrest of Maoist leaders and members in the state from Kanchan da to Saraswati has raised the concern of the police administration. It has already been confirmed that a secret movement of Maoism is going on in some parts of the state. In particular, maoists have made inroads into the tea plantation areas of the area.
