India may allow export of wheat, rice

India might allow export of wheat and rice owing to the record food grain production this year. This was revealed by Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Minister Sharad Pawar in New Delhi today. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function Mr Pawar said that the time is right to allow export of wheat and rice as there is ample buffer stock and good production is expected in the coming season. He said that the total food grain production is expected to grow by 6.5 percent this year over the previous year.

He informed that the final decision on exports will be taken in the meeting of Empowered Group of Ministers to be held next week. He however made it clear that first priority will be given to meet the demands of domestic consumers.

AIR Correspondent reports that the Government had banned export of wheat in 2008 and that of non-basmati rice in 2009.
