India has provided seeds and 500 tractors to Sri Lanka to boost agriculture in the neighbouring country, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

Seeds and tractors were supplied for the use of farmers in Northern Sri Lanka especially during the “Maha” sowing season, Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

India has also gifted 95,000 agricultural starters packs for reviving the livelihood activities of returning Internally Displaced Persons in Northern Sri Lanka, he said.

A six-member delegation was sent to the island country in September 2009 for a detailed discussion for setting up of an Institute of Agricultural Transformation, Thomas added.

Sri Lanka made a request for revival of two sugar mills in the Eastern province of the country in August this year which is under consideration of the government, the minister said.
