A lawyer for Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade has accused the US authorities of making a mistake in the investigation. Attorney Daniel Arshack said an agent who drew up charges against Khobragade, made a mistake in reading a form submitted on behalf of her domestic worker. He said the error was in mistaking Khobragade’s listed salary for what she intended to pay her housekeeper. Arshack said, the mistake led to the arrest of Ms. Khobragade two weeks ago in New York.

She is charged with submitting false documents to obtain a Work Visa for her housekeeper. Her arrest and strip search in New York drew angry responses from India. New Delhi has downgraded the immunity of certain category of US consular officials and withdrew the immunity enjoyed by their family members. This is in line with the restricted immunity given to India’s Consular officials in the US.
