Hyderabad : Russell Page once said that “To plant trees is to give body and life to one’s dreams of a better world.” In recognition of the importance of initiatives such as planting trees to do our part to combat climate change, the greatest threat to our existence, the graduating batch of 2023 at Indus International School Hyderabad has taken part in a tree plantation drive, today, at Indus International School, Shankarpally. The Grade 12 students, soon to be graduates, planted 120 saplings at the organic plant garden located in the school campus, aiming to create awareness on the importance of taking such actions to empower our environment and make those around us more climate conscious.

The tree plantation drive has been a tradition for every graduating batch. Amongst numerous other initiatives, this is the school’s way of instilling responsibility and sensitizing students to improve environmental conditions, simultaneously encouraging them to take actions, regardless of how small or big they are, to combat and reduce climate change. The 120 trees that were collectively planted are not only symbols of each student that has learnt and grown at Indus, ready to make their mark in the world, but also represent the school’s core values of love, empathy, discipline, and respect that students will carry forward with them in the future, particularly with regard to the environment and their surroundings.

Indus Hyderabad, following the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, prides itself in being actively engaged in CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service), a core requirement for every student to pass the IB Diploma Programme. The tree plantation drive is merely one of the numerous initiatives that are being taken as part of CAS and the school’s mission to contribute to a brighter future, and other such projects include the Areca Leaf Project, Lake Revival Project, Midday Meal Project and Plastic Recycling Drives to name a few.

The impacts of this drive are multifold, not only has it been motivated by an environmental cause, but it also represents a collective act taken by the young eagles of Indus Hyderabad with the intent to drive towards a more sustainable and climate aware future. Aligning with CAS, the core component of IB that aims to encourage students to develop their personal and interpersonal growth by learning through experience, and promoting the reduction of climate change, this initiative is indeed one of many that reflects the potential amongst each individual to emerge as a climate leader.
