IPS: The Future of Flat Panel Displays

New Delhi : It is widely acknowledged that how technology has changed the lives of countless people. The good thing is that technology keeps changing itself from time to time as well! From the primitive black and white sets to the sleek LCD screens, technology in the television arena has truly come a long way. The latest to capture the imagination of consumers as well as manufacturers is the IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel technology.

With cut throat competition amongst many players in the market, the IPS Technology is truly the panel technology for the current times. What makes it unique is the way it changes the entire television viewing experience. IPS is actually a panel manufacturing process that uses more layers and glass. This process produces a wider viewing angle and more vivid colors, eliminating the pale and washed out colours that were commonly seen in normal LCD TVs, while also consuming 30% less energy. When the surface of the panel is touched or has a finger pressed against it, it does not create the temporary image trails typical of normal LCD screens. So this process allows for the manufacturing of very thin monitors, measuring less than a centimeter thick.

Thus IPS is a new type of panel that employs horizontal commutation of its liquid crystal elements instead of traditional vertical alignment (VA). This expands the potential for greater frame frequency, allowing, for example, four-fold increase in frequency, from 50 Hertz (Hz) to 200 Hz. Therefore, instead of 50 frames per second, the TV will display 200 frames per second, that is, it offers four times more visual input per second. This reduces response times while substantially improving the dynamic image quality of programs related to cricket, action movies, F1 races and others.

IPS panels are especially popular with sports aficionados who love watching blur-free motion pictures. With an IPS panel, one is assured of vivid and clear moving images because of excellent Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT) performance and variation. Action fanatics can be assured that there will be no colour distortion from any angle because of no shift in gamma rays, thus being least strenuous to human eyes. The touch panel is also vastly stable as moving picture image sticking does not occur.

Dr. Manish Sharma, an eminent professor from IIT Delhi. Dr. Sharma says “IPS LCD’s have won unanimous favour of professionals because of dynamic definition and is the most precise technology for color reducibility as the pure black layer is much clearer giving you a perfect color resolution. IPS has features realizing wide viewing angle and rapid response time which enables clear display of vivid, realistic images in action intensive sports, and high speed gaming. Hence, this makes IPS the most suited technology for home usage as well as for the professional sector.

In a VA panel the liquid crystal molecules are compressed on knocking, become distorted and leak the light. The IPS panel is hard. Its molecular arrangement does change even on being knocked. When the IPS panel is pressed down, the original colours remain, with some change of brightness. The viewing angle of IPS panel is thus much better, mainly for it can ensure the proportion of the 3 colours within a large visible range. With so many international sports events coming up, manufacturers of IPS panels can expect a surge in sales as well! Companies like LG have introduced IPS panels in India, and it should not be very long before LG’s IPS technology becomes the technology that replaces all others, and changes television viewing for Indians forever!
