Jammu and Kashmir govt has put in motion the process to repeal the controversial AFSPA from some areas with a high-level committee set to review the scope of the Disturbed Areas Act in the state.

The committee comprising Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda, state Home Secretary B R Sharma and head of Nagrota-based 16 Corps Lt Gen Rameshwar Roy will be meeting soon and review the requirement of Disturbed Areas act in Jammu, official sources said on Wednesday.

After this, the second committee which will have Khoda, Sharma and Srinagar-based Corps Commander Lt Gen N C Marwah as its members will meet in Srinagar.

These meetings are meant to review the Disturbed Areas Act in the entire state and carve out areas from where it could be removed, the sources said.

According to the sources, there were areas where the Army has virtually no presence and virtually no role to play in maintaining any sort of security environment.

“It is in those areas that we are contemplating withdrawal of the Distrubed Areas act which will then autmomaticaly mean that the AFSPA does not apply there” a senior state government official said.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said that after the visit of US President Barack Obama he will be sitting down with officials in reviewing the possibilities of lifting AFSPA in some places and “then we will move forward and implement them.”
