Jammu region was battered with incessant rains for last two days and due to flash floods across the region, a group of seven villagers got stucked on a Marooned island inside the overflowing river Ujh in Dhaloti area of Kathua district Wednesday afternoon.
Jammu Correspondent reports that in order to evacuate the stucked villagers, an Indian Air Force helicopter of MI 17 Helicopter Unit, Jammu was immediately pressed into service to rescue the villagers.
The helicopter reached over the rescue spot around 1715 hrs and the crew quickly selected an appropriate spot to position the helicopter as close as possible to the ground and next to the Marooned villagers since no suitable space was available for landing.
Two Garud Special Forces Commandoes were then lowered onto the island and reached the survivors and guided the stucked persons to reach the helicopter.
A total of 7 persons including 3 women and 3 children were then evacuated to the nearest landing ground avaialable in a village next to the banks of Ujh river.
The IAF responded swiftly and rescued the individual before the water could rise to dangerous level during the night.
The mission was closely co ordinated by Chief of Operations at Jammu Air Base Group Captain Sandeep Singh.
