Guwahati : Superstar Kareena Kapoor Khan to visit Assam to raise awareness on Maternal-Infant Health.Unicef India’s celebrity advocate and Bollywood superstar Kareena Kapoor Khan is likely to visit Assam soon for an awareness programme on the issues of maternal-infant health. With the rise in cases of the infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in the state, the Unicef is trying to rope in Kareena for a visit to Assam to address the issues. The superstar has been working with the Unicef India since 2013, lending support to various awareness programs and advocating the same. From programs on menstrual hygiene to maternal health, the actor has been actively involved interacting with the public. With the pitiful IMR, MMR record of the state, the Centre had already been aggressively carrying out vaccination and medication drives across various districts of Assam, the Unicef India too is planning for rigorous awareness programmes here. It may be mentioned that the IMR in Assam is reported to be at 44 against the national figure of 37(the number of deaths per 1,000 live births of children under one year of age) and the MMR is reported to be at 300 against the pan-India average of 167(the annual number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births).
