Keen to strengthen ties with India: Trinidad & Tobago PM

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar has said that her country is keen to strengthen and deepen the ties with India.

Talking to media after she was accorded ceremonial reception at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, she recalled the strong cultural and historical relations between India and Trinidad and Tobago.

Mrs. Bissessar arrived in New Delhi yesterday on a 10-day visit to India. She is accompanied by a high-level ministerial delegation.

She will hold delegation level talks with the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh this evening to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

A number of pacts in the areas of health, education and culture are expected to be signed after the talks.

She will call on the President and the Vice President and exchange views with other leaders during her stay in India. She will also address the captains of Industry to enhance the trade and commerce between the two countries.

In 2010 India’s trade with the Latin American and Caribbean region was $23 billion.

Mrs. Bissessar will be the Chief Guest at the Pravasi Bharati Divas in Jaipur and will be honoured with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award on 9th January.

Apart from visiting Bihar where she traces her roots, she will also visit Kolkata and Mumbai during her stay in India.

It is a first state visit to India of the year and is also the first by a woman head of the government of Indian origin.
