  • The empowered committee appointed by the Supreme Court that met in New Delhi today, agreed to hear the arguments of both Kerala and Tamil Nadu on the Mullaperiyar dam issue on another day.

    At the same time, Kerala government is holding an emergency Cabinet meeting this evening at Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the safety of 116 year old dam in Idukki district.

    Apart from an all party meeting scheduled for tomorrow a special session of the state assembly will be convened on coming Friday to discuss Mullaperiyar dam safety issue.

    Two ministers of Oommen Chandy government are observing fast today demanding immediate reduction of water level of the dam to 120 feet. While the National Human Rights Commission is to take up the case today, members of state Human Rights Commission will be visiting the dam tomorrow.

    Meanwhile, in reply to Tamil Nadu government’s plea for deploying CISF personnel at the dam, Kerala government has stated that it can ensure ample security in and around Mullaperiyar dam. Situated in Kerala, Mullaperiyar dam is on a lease to Tamil Nadu signed during the British regime.
