  • Mumbai: India’s leading Pharma Company in the oral healthcare segment – ICPA Health Products Ltd (ICPA) hosted its latest interactive online session on the subject of Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR). The 13th episode of the Clinical Series was led by guest speaker Dr Madhur Kankaria, MDS (OMFS), DICO on 12th April and offered dental surgeons guidance on avoiding mishaps with GBR. A gold medallist in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Kankaria, enlightened participants on the most common major and minor complications including flap dehiscences, infections, and neurological and vascular complications.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a dental surgical procedure that uses barrier membranes with or without bone grafts or/and bone substitutes to regenerate enough bone for implant placement, survival and success.

For many years, GBR has been a workhorse to regenerate bone in vertical and horizontal bone defects. However, the procedure is technique sensitive and is fraught with complications if certain protocols are not adhered to. In the session, Dr Madhur Kankaria broadly covered principles of GBR, patient selection, defect types and the ways to use the biomaterials. The lecture covered surgical mishaps leading to neurological and vascular complications and the best practices to prevent the complications, including pre-operative scans (CBCT) for thorough evaluation, the Rule of 5 while harvesting bone from symphysis and recommendations on pharmacological management in case of nerve injury, and the use of chlorhexidine mouthwash for the management of infections, among others.
