  • Lava spews, threatening homes as Hawaii’s Kilauea shows no sign of letting up

    Published on June 25, 2018

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano eruption showed now sign of letting up on Saturday (June 23). Molten lava spewing from what volcanologists have described as ‘Fissure Eight’ — one of the most active fissures on the Big Island. Lava flows appeared to creep dangerously close to several homes, yet again.

U.S. President Donald Trump in mid-June approved federal emergency housing aid and other relief for volcano victims whose homes have been destroyed, state officials said.

His approval came after Governor David Ige formally requested assistance for an estimated 2,800 residents who have lost their homes to lava flows or were forced from their dwellings under evacuation orders since Kilauea rumbled back to life on May 3.
