Matrimony.com Limited, whose flagship brand is BharatMatrimony, has obtained an interim injunction against KalyanMatrimony, owned by Kalyan Jewellers, from the High Court of Madras for infringement of its well-known trademarks TamilMatrimony, TeluguMatrimony, KeralaMatrimony and KannadaMatrimony through the Google Adwords Programme and in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
The Company has also obtained interim injunction from High Court of Madras against a few other violators who have domain names similar to the trademarks of Matrimony.com brands. The injunctions have been obtained against “Bharatmatrimony.org”, “reddytelugumatrimony.com,”telugumatrimony.org”, “vanjaritelugumatrimony.com”, “snkeralamatrimony.com”, “alltelugumatrimony.com” as well as the mobile application “Bharatcommunitymatrimony”.
The Company’s move comes close on the heels of some matrimony service players trying to create confusion in the minds of people by misusing trademarks of Matrimony.com in their domain name, descriptions on their websites, in Google SEO & Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and on the App Store. The Company chose legal action to protect its trademarks and misrepresentation of the company’s brands which have earned tremendous goodwill and brand reputation spanning two decades.
