  • Mullapperiyar dam issue: Kerala cabinet to hold emergency meeting on Monday

    Published on December 4, 2011

In Kerala, an emergency Cabinet meeting will be held on Monday to discuss the Mullapperiyar dam safety issue. The state government will be filing an interim petition before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, requesting lowering of water level of 116 year old dam to 120 feet on safety grounds.

Two Ministers of the state Cabinet have also decided to participate in Satyagraha on the issue on Monday. The special Cabinet meeting is likely to take a decision about Advocate General Dandapani who reportedly misrepresented the state’s stand in the High Court on Mullapperiyar dam safety. At the same time, mass agitation supported by different political parties and and their youth wings is gaining further momentum in different parts of Idukki district. Measures are in place to shift people from Periyar river banks if the water level increases unusually.

Meanwhile, the decision of Tamil Nadu government to abstain from official level talks on the issue has evoked wide criticism from different quarters. The Centre has directed the Secretary level talks between Kerala and Tamil Nadu to sort out Mullapperiyar dam issue.
