  • Mumbai Monorail opens for public; passengers queue up at stations

    Commercial operations of the 8.9-km first phase of monorail connecting Wadala-Chembur station started on Sunday.

    mono12In an overwhelming response to the first day of the Mumbai Mono Rail, people turned in a large numbers at all stations.

    However, the mono rail missed the deadline of 7 am and was delayed by an hour.

    Ticket windows were full to their capacities as commuters were standing in a long queue with an hope for their maiden journey in an air conditioned coaches.

    Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan inaugurated the service on Saturday.

    The Rs 1,900-crore section is expected to ferry around two lakh passengers a month and is expected to supplement the suburban conventional train network across the metropolis.

    The fares have been fixed between Rs 5 and 11.

    To begin with, the services will operate with four coaches having a combined carrying capacity of around 570 passengers at an interval of every 15 minutes.
