Nepal polls: Vote count underway

Nepalis queue up to vote at a polling station in the outskirts of Kathmandu In Nepal, counting of votes for first phase of local elections has begun. Results are expected from the afternoon.

Local elections were held in Nepal on May 14 after a gap of 20 years for 281 out of 283 local bodies. Representatives for two local bodies have been elected unopposed.

73 per cent voters exercised their franchise in 34 districts. More than 49,000 candidates have tried their luck in the first phase of local elections.

Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav expressed gratitude towards voters for the overwhelming participation in the local polls. He said that the enthusiastic participation of voters from all walks of life will encourage the voters during the second phase of elections on June 14.
