Netherlands wins toss; opts to field against SA

    Published on March 3, 2011

At Mohali a short while ago, South Africa were 26 for 0 against the Netherlands in a Group-B clash of the on-going ICC Cricket World Cup. All India Radio is broadcasting live commentary on the match on the Rajdhani and FM Gold Channels. Earlier in the day, the Oranje had won the toss and opted to field first.

This afternoon, Pakistan will play Canada at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo in a Group-A day-night encounter.

In the first biggest shock of the on-going ICC Cricket World Cup, Minnows Ireland yesterday stunned the England side to record an astonishing 3-wicket victory at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Using just 50 balls, Kevin O’Brien blazed the quickest century in the history of the World Cup, as the Irish overhauled a mammoth 327 made by the Britons with five balls to spare. O’Brien in his innings clubbed six sixes along with thirteen boundaries to score an extra-ordinary 113 of just 63 balls. He was adjudged man of the match.

Electing to bat first, English endured a ballistic start with both the Openers Andrew Strauss and Kevin Peitersen scoring 72 runs in the first ten overs. The third stand of 167 runs between half centurians, Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell, added to the woes of the Irish as England sailed to an intimidating 327 in their 50 overs.

With the wicket on the first ball, Ireland on the other hand tried to retaliate to the England bowlers with some meaty blows. But it was Kevin O’Brien and Alex Cusack, who produced a batting masterclass adding 162 runs for the third wicket and crushing the English hopes for their second victory.

Today, South Africa will play Netherlands at Mohali while Pakistan will meet Canada in a day-night encounter at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. All India Radio will broadcast the live commentary of the South Africa-Netherlands match from 9 AM onwards.
