As we approach 2024, the fertilizer industry gears up for a notable transformation. Parvinder Singh Gahlaut, Managing Director of Indian Potash Limited (IPL), offers crucial insights to propel the industry forward in India. Parvinder Singh Gahlaut adds, “The Indian fertilizer market is anticipated to exhibit a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.7% from 2024 to 2032, potentially attaining a market valuation of approximately USD 1394.16 billion by 2032 as per reports. This growth trajectory is attributed to the rising need for enhanced food production and advancements in agricultural practices.”
PS Gahlaut’s understanding and cognizance of the fertilizer market, promises a positive outlook for the industry ensuring food security and economic prosperity for the nation.

Let’s understand some of the forthcoming trends in detail as envisioned by Parvinder Singh Gahlaut.
- Sustainable Fertilizer Solutions
One of the key trends expected in 2024 is the increased focus on sustainable fertilizer solutions. With environmental concerns taking centre stage, the industry is shifting towards eco-friendly alternatives that minimize the environmental impact of fertilizers. “Research and development efforts are underway to create fertilizers that release nutrients slowly, reducing the risk of nutrient runoff and minimizing environmental impact,” shares Parvinder Singh Gahlaut. “Other innovations in this realm include bio-based fertilizers, precision agriculture techniques, and advanced nutrient management practices which shall improve the soil health tremendously,” PS Gahlaut added. These sustainable formulations will play a crucial role in conserving natural resources and safeguarding the ecosystem.
- Smart Fertilizers and Precision Agriculture
Advancements in technology are poised to revolutionize the way fertilizers are applied. Smart fertilizers, equipped with sensors and IoT technology, will enable precise nutrient delivery based on real-time data, optimizing resource usage, and maximizing crop yields. “This trend aligns with the broader movement towards precision agriculture,” cites Parvinder Singh Gahlaut; “this will be imperative since data-driven decision-making will play a pivotal role in farming operations,” Parvinder Singh Gahlaut added. These technologies empower farmers and manufacturers with valuable insights, enabling them to make informed decisions about nutrient application and crop management.
- Customized Nutrient Formulations & Aatmanirbhar Bharat
In 2024, customization will be a key focus area for the fertilizer industry. Tailoring nutrient formulations to specific soil types, crops, and environmental conditions will become more prevalent. This approach will not only enhance crop productivity but also minimize excess nutrient application, reducing overall environmental impact. Riding the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the government aims to reduce reliance on imported urea by 2025, replacing it with domestically manufactured nano urea fertilizers. “As part of this initiative, approximately 8.5 million metric tonnes (mt) of urea will be substituted with 170 million bottles of nano urea,” explains Parvinder Singh Gahlaut.
- Subsidies, Research Grants, and Regulatory Framework
Governments worldwide are implementing subsidies and incentives to drive the adoption of sustainable fertilizer practices and India is no exception. Last week, the Central government granted approval for the extension of the urea subsidy program for a period of three years, until 2024-25, allocating a budget of Rs. 3.68 lakh crore. “This forms a part of a comprehensive package worth Rs. 3.70 lakh crore aimed at introducing ‘innovative schemes for farmers’ with a strong emphasis on their ‘overall well-being’ and the promotion of ‘sustainable agriculture,’” explains Parvinder Singh Gahlaut.
Considerable financial resources are being allocated to support research and development initiatives within the fertilizer industry, crucial for promoting innovation and the advancement of sustainable technologies. The government of India also gave the green light to a new initiative called PM-PRANAM (PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness, Generation, Nourishment, and Amelioration of Mother Earth). This scheme, first announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her Budget speech in February, is designed to incentivize states to decrease their reliance on chemical fertilizers and encourage the adoption of alternative fertilizers. “The enforcement of strict environmental regulations and standards by governments is compelling the industry to embrace greener practices. These regulatory frameworks serve as important guidelines for manufacturers and farmers, ensuring that their operations align with environmentally responsible principles,” iterates Parvinder Singh Gahlaut.
- Enhanced Farmer Education and Training
To realize the full potential of technical advancements, PS Gahlaut emphasizes the need for comprehensive farmer education and training programs. Providing farmers with the knowledge and skills to effectively implement these modern practices will be crucial for widespread adoption. Workshops, demonstrations, and access to expert advice will play a pivotal role in empowering farmers to make informed decisions about fertilization practices.
The year 2024 promises to be a pivotal year for the fertilizer industry, characterized by a surge in innovation and sustainability initiatives. With a concerted effort from industry leaders, farmers, and governments, we can look forward to a future where fertilizers play a vital role in achieving both agricultural productivity and environmental stewardship. These insights provide a valuable roadmap for navigating this exciting period of transformation in the fertilizer industry.
