Kolkata : With an objective to save animals, JD Institute of Fashion Technology, one of the country’s leading design education institutions, organized a vegan fashion workshop in association with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

The eye-opener presentation on vegan fashion by PETA India representative Radhika Suryavanshi addressed the cries and pain of animals that go unheeded in the fashion industry. PETA referred to leather and wool as the cause of animal abuse in the design industry.

The session included various case studies of fashion brands, initiatives by PETA, and issues pertaining to animal rights. During the recent Fashion Awards by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, students had designed two collections and an interior installation in association with PETA. The initiative was aimed to sensitize people about vegan fashion.

LEATHER: According to PETA, leather industries create more pollution than transport industry. The presentation highlighted successful vegan fashion initiatives such as using pineapple leather instead of leather from animal hide, which involves slaughtering animals brutally.

WOOL: According to PETA wool manufacturing puts pressure on the environment. An alternative of wool was made by PETA US in collaboration with noted fashion designer Stella McCartney, which has proved to be a success. PETA insists on promoting biodegradable materials like hemp and soybean.
