  • PM seeks to achieve a “meaningful consensus” on Lokpal, Lokayukta bill

    Published on March 23, 2012

New Delhi : Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh called an all-party meeting in New Delhi this morning seeking a meaningful consensus on the stalemate in the Rajya Sabha over the Lokpal bill.

The bill could not be voted upon amidst disruptions on the last day of the last winter session. Several opposition parties and the UPA ally-Trinamul Congress have strongly opposed inclusion of Laokayutktas in the bill.

BJP is opposed to reservation for minorities in the anti-graft bodies.

Government and the opposition are also divided over the validity of 97 amendments moved to the bill during the winter session.

Government had earlier agreed to the demand of the opposition to take up the bill before the first half of budget session of Parliament comes to end on the 30th of this month. Lok Sabha had already passed the bill.
