President Kovind presents Swachh Survekhshan-2019 Awards

President Ram Nath Kovind today presented Swachh Survekhshan-2019 Awards in New Delhi. Indore bagged award for cleanest city for third straight year in Swachh Survekshan.

New Delhi Municipal Council area gets cleanest small city award while  Uttarakhand’s Gauchar was adjudged Best Ganga Town in the survey. Top ranked cities received a statue of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi as award for their work towards cleanliness. Swachh Survekshan 2019 covered all Urban Local Bodies in the country, making it the largest such cleanliness survey in the world.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kovind appreciated those who are taking active part in cleanliness drive in the country. He said, Mahatma Gandhi had played a pivotal role in spearheading the movement of cleanliness. The President expressed confidence that people will take inspiration from just concluded Kumbh Mela and the level of cleanliness in it.

Mr Kovind said, there is a need to change the mindset of people towards cleanliness as many people pay a lot of attention to personal hygiene and cleanliness at home but not to public cleanliness. He said, culture of cleanliness has to become an integral part of in the lives of the citizens.

Mr Kovind said there is a need to include cleanliness in the syllabus of schools and higher educational institutions. Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, the urban transformation that is being attempted in the country is the most comprehensive and ambitious framework of planned urbanisation.
