  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Assam visit canceled. Khelo India game competition of national importance: Kiran Rijiju

    Guwahati: Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju today told that the Government of India has declared the Khelo India Games a competition of national importance. The third season of Khelo India Youth Games is scheduled to begin in Guwahati from January 10.

    Our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has said that the Khelo India Games is not just an event, it is a movement. Promoting sports and fitness among the youth and sensitising parents to motivate young athletes to pursue a sporting dream is a first step towards making India a sporting superpower,” Rijiju said in a media release.
    “I am confident that this move will inspire more youngsters to step up and pursue sports seriously,” he added.
    The host broadcaster of the Khelo India Youth Games, Star Sports, will now mandatorily share the feed of the tournament with Doordarshan.

    Star Sports will telecast the Games live for eight hours in Hindi and regional languages on each day of the competition as part of an agreement the broadcaster has with the Sports Authority of India.

    Around 6,800 athletes are expected to participate in the third edition of the Khelo India Youth Games. Meanwhile, PM Modi to Visit to Assam Cancelled amid ‘CAA’ Protests. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cancelled his scheduled visit to Guwahati in Assam to inaugurate the Khelo India Games. The visit was scheduled for January 10.According to internal sources, the visit has officially been cancelled.It is to be mentioned here that the indigenous bodies in Assam have threatened to intensify the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act if PM Modi visits Assam amid the unrest over the controversial legislation.The All Assam Students Union (AASU) leadership has expressed its opposition to the Prime Minister’s visit in the midst of the volatile situation in the state.

    On the other hand, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) leadership launched a campaign termed as “Khelo India, Bhago Modi” against Narendra Modi. Members of the indigenous body had planned to greet Modi with the chants upon his arrival.
