Prof. Dr. M.S. Valiathan, an eminent cardiac surgeon, a teacher and researcher, has been appointed as National Research Professor for a second term of five years with effect from 01.01.2011. 
Prof. Valiathan will be entitled to an honorarium of Rs.75,000/- per month in accordance with the existing terms and conditions under the Scheme of National Research Professorship (1949).

Dr. Valiathan was earlier appointed as a National Research Professor on 01.01.2006 vide the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s notification dated 10.04.2007.
After being so appointed, Prof. Valiathan has continued to work in the field of medicine and is currently engaged in developing the field of “Ayurvedic Biology”. He is continuing to lecture, publish and research. His work in synthesizing Ayurveda with modern medicine has been commended by the Scientific Advisory Committee.
