  • ‘Put up the waist-size status’ Campaign becomes rage in social media around World Obesity Day

    New Delhi :  28 Pink Parrots, 32 Sweating bungee-jumps or red kittens… and so on. You might have felt baffled lately Health Duniyaseeing such status on your friend’s social media profiles. While such status kept you guessing only a few would have realized that this was actually a confession of their friend’s waist size! Surprised again?

    These status messages were inspired by a recent awareness campaign on the occasion World Obesity Day, October 26, launched by health portal Healthyduniya.com which decided to observe the day and the cause with a unique and extended celebration, which serves more meaning than just another awareness activity. And, that’s how ‘Put up the waist-size status’ campaign came into picture.

    The campaign which was run through a ‘secret’ messaging on WhatsApp, Blackberry Messenger and Google Messaging called on people put up a the size of their waist as their status on social media as mark of confession so that those with additional weight can start towards reducing that.

    The campaign soon became a rage on social media with thousands of people putting up the status on Facebook, Twitter, Google Chat, WhatsApp and BBM in the first 3-4 days of the campaign.

    The campaign is being run for a week from October 20 to 26, which has been christened as World Obesity Awareness Week.

    “With more than 3 crore people and counting entering the club of obese in India, a need for the right kind of awareness is indeed the challenge. People should be made to think and introspect instead of just making them see the bad scene of obesity in our country. Our campaign was meant just to make people realize this,” said Wasfia Jalali, Executive Editor of HealthyDuina.com.

    The campaign ‘Put up the waist-size status’ encouraged the online generation to take notice of their waist-line well before it goes out of their hands. And, it is all a matter of one status and a little bit of consciousness towards your own health, she added.

    Quirky statuses for different waist-sizes were introduced to people via the healthyduniya.com facebook page and the campaign witnessed action right from the very minute it was uploaded. Like, for instance if you are a lady and your waist-size is 28 then you would have status saying 28 Pink Parrots or 28 speeding Ferraris, for men.

    So, the catch was to still keep the waist-size a secret but know in your own mind when and where to draw a line and keep an amusing yet proactive check against gaining any amount of extra fat.

    Interestingly, obesity is mostly looked upon as having a relatively awkward body-shape. But, the truth is that it is not just about shape, but goes beyond it, manifolds. An obese person has all the more chances to meet heart-related ailments like heart-attack, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high blood cholesterol and some kinds of cancer as well.

    So, as we approach the World Obesity Day on October 26th 2013 – it is time we all ‘Put up the waist-size status’ and let our own ‘ignorant’ self know what needs to be done.
