A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 has struck off the coast of the Philippines. A tsunami warning has been issued for nearby countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the Pacific, including the US state of Hawaii.

The US Geological Survey said, the quake had a depth of 33 kilometres and hit around 139 kilometres east of the city of Sulangan. It is not yet clear whether the quake has caused any damage or fatalities in the Philippines.
