  • Red alert in Assam districts after met warning of heavy rainfall

    Assam FloodIn Assam, precautionary measures are being taken in four districts after the Met department reported that there might be rainfall of 488 millimeter in the next 72 hours. The Assam government has issued a red alert in Sonitpur, Barpeta,Golaghat and North Lakhimpur district. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed all concerned departments to take necessary precautionary measures and to move people living near the river banks to safer places . Barpeta Deputy Commissioner said that all the concerned departments and Goanburhas have been informed to create awareness at grassroot level. Boats, food stocks and life saving medicines are being kept in sufficient numbers. NDRF and State Disaster Response Forces have been kept on stand by. Meanwhile, traffic movement has been restored at Jorabat area near Guwahati late last night after hundreds of vehicles were stranded for several hours due to landslides. Official sources said that concerned departments have repaired the road for vehicle movement. The movement of hundreds of long distance buses on NH 37 and NH 40 was also halted for many hours.
