Hyderabad: Rotarians donated Cytometer worth Rs 66 lakh to Basavatarakam Indo American 
It helps in diagnosis and monitoring of Blood Cancers in Children. It will provide free specialized diagnostic services to children from families below the poverty line (BPL) suffering from Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), commonly known as Blood Cancer. Each test costs Rs 20,000/- which is unaffordable to many. It is expected to do 500 such tests in a year. Which mean Cytometer will provide services worth Rs 100 lakhs per annum.
The Cytomter is provided by Rotary Club of Hyderabad Deccan (Rotary District 3150, India), in partnership with Rotary Club of Naperville (Rotary District 6450, USA) and The Rotary Foundation from the funds raised and arranged by them.
Speaking on the occasion Rotary District Governor Ramesh Vangala said Rotary in India spends Rs 100 crore every year through its Rotary Foundation’s International Grant. Indian Rotary is the second biggest in the world in its contribution to Rotary Foundation. This year alone we have contributed 18 million US dollars he told.

Rotary Club of Hyderabad Deccan President Uday Pilani informed that they donated a 3-laser, 11 channel cytometer. It is setup at and run by the Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI) for free specialized diagnostic services to children from families below the poverty line (BPL) suffering from Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), commonly known as Blood Cancer.
This is being done under its Save a Life a Day – Let’s Beat Leukaemia initiative
Flow cytometry is a technology used for diagnosing and monitoring blood cancers .The thirteen color flow cytometer is capable of appropriately diagnosing leukemias (blood cancers) so as to enable optimal patient management. It also helps in monitoring residual disease during the course of treatment.
Rotary Club of Hyderabad Deccan has initated efforts in collaboration with Basavatarakam Indo American cancer Hospital & Research Institute to offer services to the poor.
This will benefit children from BPL families who are being treated for ALL at MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre (MNJ) and BIACH&RI. MNJ is the sole tertiary public referral centre for cancer for the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and north Karnataka with a population of over 100 millionand is government designated to provide free treatment to patients below the poverty line; BIACH&RI also provides free treatment to this community. This will directly benefit ALL affected children by providing an accurate diagnosis of their leukaemia and help doctors to determine the exact customized dosage for each child ensuring excellent care that can greatly increase their chances of survival.The cost of the equipment and initial setup is approximately Rs 66 lakhs. BIACHRI will maintain the cytometry equipment and provide the diagnosis facility free of cost to these BPL children/families as referred to them by MNJ/Rotary for the life of the machine.

Dr S Sudha Murthy, Chief of Pathology & Lab Medicine, Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital said, “The 11-color flow cytometer is capable of appropriately diagnosing leukemias(blood cancers) so as to enable optimal patient management. Since the technology will help deliver faster results, we would be able to offer these services at substantially lower prices. Rotary Club of Hyderabad Deccan has initiated efforts in collaboration with Basavatarakam Indo American cancer Hospital & Research Institute to offer free services to the poor.”
