Bengaluru: Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar that has been actively involved in initiating campaigns toward Swachh Bharath Abhiyaan in Urban Bengaluru is now all set to sensitize the public in rural areas of Bengaluru and focus on rural development initiatives. As a first step towards this, Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar will be organizing a talk on waste management at Sonahallipura village, Hoskote Taluk on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 10:30 onwards. The talk on waste management would be delivered by Dr. Meenakshi Bharath.

Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar taking another step towards Swachh Bharath Abiyan is now focusing on creating awareness and development of rural Bangalore. Rural development will be a prime focus area for Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar (RBI) in the coming years. The club has been involved with Sonahallipura village for the last few years, executing two very successful projects (very low-interest micro-credit and low-cost sanitary napkin manufacturing unit). RBI now aims for a deeper impact on the lives of the people of the village by undertaking several more initiatives in areas such as water management, crop productivity, public health, infrastructure, education, etc. One such is to address the problems in solid waste management. This will be kicked off by a training session which will be conducted by Dr. Meenakshi Bharath.

Dr. Meenakshi Bharath is a Gynecologist and a fertility specialist by profession and she is also a green campaigner, an advocate for Clean Bangalore, a strident voice for garbage segregation and recycling, and a relentless fighter to create visibility for the problems of voiceless people. The program would consist of a talk by Dr. Meenakshi Bharath showcasing best practices for & success stories of waste segregation at source, composting, and dry waste management followed by a walk around the village to identify practical on-ground issues.

Talking about the initiative, Mahesh Parikh, President, Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar shared, “Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar has constantly strived for the well being of the society in every way possible. Our thrust is now on rural development initiatives and this is our first step towards it. Dr. Meenakshi being a doctor can help the audience relate well to the health hazards they are exposed to with improper waste management such as burning of plastic waste.”

He further added, “We as individuals should also take up our responsibilities seriously in order to keep our environment clean and hygienic for better living. We will be using this training as the first step and a springboard towards making Sonahallipura zero-waste! ”
