SC to pronounce verdict in DA case against Jayalalitha, Sasikala today

sasikalaNew Delhi: In the Disproportionate Assets Case against late chief minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa and her close aide and AIADMK ad hoc General Secretary VK Sasikala is to be pronounced today.

 

The ‘Causes List’ of the apex court has listed the case for pronouncing its verdict on the 19 year old case at 10.30 am. The verdict comes in the backdrop of the ongoing power struggle within the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu between Ms Sasikala and the caretaker chief minister O.Panneerselvam.

 

Meanwhile, Ms VK Sasikala told newspersons this today in Chennai that she would ensure unity in the party and continue its rule for the rest of its tenure. She made a scathing attack on the Mr Panneerselvam saying he is showing the attributes of a traitor against the party.

 

She said it was he who pleaded with her to take over the party and the Government immediately after the demise of late leader J.Jayalalithaa. Later, she reached Kuvathur where the party MLAs are lodged in a beach resort.

 

This is the third time she has visited the resort in as many days and announced that she would be staying there for the day.

 

Meanwhile, caretaker chief minister O.Panneerselvam visited Secretariat at Fort St George in Chennai and scrutinized files, for the first time since his revolt against Ms Sasikala last Tuesday.

 

The principal opposition party in the state, the DMK, has sought floor test in the Assembly to prove who enjoy the confidence of the House. The party’s higher level strategic committee meeting was held this evening in Chennai, chaired by its working president MK Stalin.

 

Eleven resolutions were passed in the meet including the one insisting that the Governor should immediately take action for facilitating a stable government in the House.

 

Another resolution sought President of India’s approval for the bill passed in the state assembly to give exemption for the state from the NEET entrance examnation for medical education.

 

Later, talking to the media, Mr Stalin said at present there is a constitutional break down prevailing in the state. He said teh stand of the party on whom to support in the Assembly in case of a confidence or no confidence motion would be made known only when the voting is initiated.

 

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has reserved its orders on two habeas corpus petitions seeking to present two of the MLAs lodged in the Kuvathur resort near Chennai allegedly on compulsion by the Sasikala camp.

 

The police made an on the spot inquiry and filed its report to the division bench comprising Justices M.Jaichandran and T.Mathivanan. The public prosecutor told the court, the two MLAs have given written statement to the police that they were staying with the other 117 MLAs, taking the total to 119, on their own, adding there has been no compulsion.
