SupremeCourtNewDelhiThe Supreme Court has dismissed Yakub Memon’s plea seeking review of award of death penalty to him in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. A three-judge bench, headed by Justice AR Dave, rejected the plea after holding that there was no ground to interfere with the judgement to hand out capital punishment to him.

In March 2013, the apex court had upheld the death sentence of Memon and ten others awarded by a special TADA court. In June , last year the vacation bench of the Supreme Court had stayed Memon’s execution. Memon’s mercy petition was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee in April last year.

Memon, is the brother of Ibrahim Memon, the alleged mastermind and the prime accused who is absconding in the blast case. Memon, the sole death row convict in the case, is now left with the only legal remedy of filing a curative petition against this judgement. He is currently lodged in Nagpur jail.

At least 257 people were killed in 13 blasts at several Mumbai landmarks, including the Bombay Stock Exchange and two crowded markets.
