Sensex gains 163 pts in opening trade

The BSE benchmark Sensex advanced over 163 points in opening trade tuesday, extending Monday’s gains on continued capital inflows by foreign funds amid a firming trend overseas.

The 30-share index rose by 163.13 points, or 0.80 per cent, to 20,332.02 points on the back of strength in oil and gas, capital goods and metal sector stocks. The index gained 43.84 points in the previous session.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved up by 43.90 points, or 0.72 per cent, to 6,119.85 points.

Brokers said trading sentiment remained bullish on the back of steady capital inflows into equities by foreign funds and firming trend on the US markets, which ended 0.73 per cent higher Monday after Citigroup posted better-than-expected earnings.

In Asian markets, the Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gained 0.59 per cent, while Japanese Nikkei was up 0.53 per cent per cent in the morning session.
