  • Setback to Modi Govt.: SC brings back Verma as CBI Chief

    Published on January 8, 2019

New Delhi : In supermacy fight involving CBI vs CBI Hon. Supreme Court sets aside order passed by Union Government divesting Alok Verma of powers of CBI Director. Mr Verma was sent on forced leave after allegations of corruption & nepotism were levelled against him by another senior officer Rakesh Asthana. Govt. sent both officers on leave pending inquiry. Alok Verma went to SC against that order, Court ordered that Alok Verma shall cease and desist from taking any major policy decision until the Select Committee ( which selects the CBI Director)  takes a further  decision on allegations against Verma. This verdict comes as a neutral order , cancelling Govt. order of forced leave to Mr Verma as well as divesting him of any real  powers. For effective & efficient running of such institutions, Police reforms are long overdue in country but none of Political Parties are showing any interest in this.
