Seventeen killed in road accident in Maharashtra

Seventeen people were killed and nine others injured when an overcrowded jeep collided with a milk-tanker in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district on Friday, police said.

The incident occurred when the jeep carrying 27 passengers collided head on with the tanker near Navegaon village in Bhandara, they said.

Following the collision, the jeep overturned leading to death of 14 passengers on the spot. Three others succumbed to injuries during treatment at a local hospital. Nine passengers sustained serious injuries, police said.

Bodies of the deceased have been taken to the rural hospital in Tiroda tehsil.

Soon after the incident, locals set up road blocks protesting against jeeps ferrying passengers, much beyond the stipulated capacity of the vehicle, police said.

Police used canes to disperse the agitated people, they said.
