  • Siddhesh Parekh aka NLYTN talks about the challenges young DJs face in the city

Mumbai is home to some of the best parties happening in the country. The city comes alive at night as flocks of people head to local bars, pubs and clubs to socialise and unwind.

What draws these people to the club? Apart from the endless bevvy and food selections, what makes people come back to any venue is the ambience and the music. While most clubs prefer playing Bollywood and commercial Hip-Hop numbers, young indie electronic artists find it difficult to get their music out to people.

Siddhesh Parekh aka NLYTN is one such artist based in Mumbai who produces bass-heavy new age music. Although his work can be classified as melodic dubstep, putting it under that hat wouldn’t do it justice as it has a certain Pop, RnB and Hip-Hop influence.

Sid says, “I know the kind of music is very high energy but there are a lot of stigmas attached to electronic music. Venues think that the audience that listens to dubstep is violent just because the concepts of headbanging and moshpits are alien to them.”

“It’s a bitter reality but most organisers and venues are just trying to sell drinks and passes and they forget about the visual and ambience aspect of the music completely. DJs who are playing for the last 12 years are still being asked to play for free! If you are not going to invest in a proper audio-visual experience, neither will the artists grow nor will the venue.” He added
NLYTN believes that once venues are more open to the idea of investing and having faith in more homegrown talent instead of the same music that clubs keep playing, the music community will be exposed to quality music that artists have been making in India for decades.
“All I have to say to young DJs in the city is stay true to your music, no matter what song who requests you to play or if they ask you to switch up the mood a little, stay true to your set and play the music that you have been preparing for that moment. Hold your ground as an artist and if you know your worth, do not play for free!” He concludes.
