  • Six more Indians qualify for Rio Olympics

    rioNew Delhi; Triple jumper Renjith Maheswary and golfer Anirban Lahiri are among the six Indians who yesterday qualified for the upcoming Rio Olympics.
    At the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru, Maheswary leaped with a national record of 17.30 metres bettering the Rio qualification mark of 16.85 metres.

    In 200 metres race, Dharambir Singh shattered national records by clocking 20.45 seconds to make the cut for Rio and become the first Indian to run in an Olympics 200m race after 36 years. Jinson Johnson ran the second fastest ever 800 metres race to qualify.

    In Golf, which will make a return to the Olympics for the first time after the 1904 St. Louis Games, three Indians – Anirban Lahiri, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chawrasia and Aditi Ashok – sealed Rio berths. The cut off for Golf for the Games is 60 in the world ranking, and it officially closed yesterday.

    While Lahiri and Chowrasia almost sealed a berth before, Aditi, the 18-year-old golfer from Bangalore, moved to 57 to make the cut following the recently concluded US Women’s Open.
    The Rio Games begin on the 5th of next month.
