  • The ambitious Soil Health Card Scheme is completing five years tomorrow. The scheme was launched in 2015  to assess the nutrient status of every farm holding in the country.

The objectives of the scheme are to issue Soil Health Cards to farmers every two years so as to provide a basis to address nutritional deficiencies in fertilization practices.

Soil Health Card provides information to farmers on the nutrient status of their soil along with recommendations on the appropriate dosage of nutrients to be applied for improving soil health and its fertility.

From 2015 to 2017, over 10 crores Soil Health Cards were distributed to farmers in the first phase. In the second phase, over 11 crore cards have been distributed to farmers across the country.

In his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on 26th November 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that he is very glad to see that farmers have come forward to implement the suggestions made in the Soil Health Card and now the farmers have realized that proper soil care is needed to increase the production.

Our Correspondent spoke to Dr. Ashok Patra, Director, Indian Institute of Soil Science on the benefits of the Soil Health Card Scheme.
