Chennai : SPL Infrastructure, one of the leading EPC Contractors in the field of Civil Engineering today announced the successful completion of Tamil Nadu’s first twin steel flyover connecting Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram. With an aim to ease out traffic congestion on NH-47, SPL Infrastructure undertook the Rs. 314.02 crore worth project and completed the same in a record time of 20 months. The twin flyovers were inaugurated and open to traffic by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi in an event last week.
Designed and constructed by Indian Engineers with technical assistance and guidance from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai the project commenced in the month of Feb 2017 and aimed to address the traffic bottle neck
“We are delighted to have partnered with the Ministry of Road Transports and Highways to construct Tamil Nadu’s first twin steel flyover. Besides clearing out the traffic congestion on one of the busiest highways, the flyovers will also help cut down the travel time significantly” said, Mr. SP Lakshmanan, Chairman of M/s SPL Infrastructure, Pvt Ltd. Adding to this, he said, “A true testimony to Make in India initiative, the flyovers have been constructed with utmost precision by using pre-fabricated structural steel members and have employed Robotic Welding to achieve the desired quality along with eliminating strenuous workload at site. Also, the structural steel members are specially coated with multiple layers of special coating materials to take care of corrosion for its entire life span.”
This first of its kind steel flyover has been designed and constructed with 300 skilled labours, a team of 100 technocrats in a record time of 20 months. These steel flyover arethe first to use E 410, an ultra-tensile steel and saves about 20 % of weight when compared to normal steel thus paving the way for how in future flyovers are to be built in congested urban environment.
Other key features of the twin steel flyovers include:
- Pile Foundations have been adopted to reduce the working area on ground andRCC pile caps are done connecting them to form the FOUNDATION system.
- To achieve the load transfer from Steel Pier to the Concrete Pile cap & Piles, large diameter steel bolts of Higher strengths have been used as the connectingmember along with the embedded Steel ANCHOR frames, of unique design.Hence the forces in the bolts (compression or tension) are safely transferred tothe foundation concrete safely.
- Pile cap shuttering is of unique design wherein it is self-supporting (without anyexternal strutting etc.) which made it possible to have regular space for traffic.Permanent profiled steel deck sheets are provided for the deck slab concreting,in between the Girders, which provides much quicker & safe construction.
- There are 109 spans in Marthandam flyover and 51 spans in Parvathipuram flyover and in all these spans Special type Spherical Bearings are used insteadof normal bearings.
- The 47 Meter obligatory span constructed in Marthandam over the Railwaytunnel along the stretch, without affecting the tunnel.
- The 32 Meter obligatory span constructed in Parvathipuram over the Y-Junctionalong the stretch, without affecting the channel, crossing the NH-47 stretch, thus keeping the water body as such.
- Overhead electric lines are shifted to underground Electrical cabling network system thus providing safe & secure system, provides complicated pole freenetwork first of its kind in a Tier 2 / 3 town in South India.
