  • New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday came down heavily on suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for her offensive remarks on the Prophet during a TV debate. Hearing a plea filed by Nupur Sharma seeking transfer of the FIRs against her to Delhi, a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J.B. Pardiwala said, Nupur Sharma should apologise to the whole country. Accusing the leader of igniting emotions across the country with her disturbing remarks, the apex court said, she is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country.

Referring to the turmoil happened across the country following Ms. Sharma’s distasteful comments  the court observed “This lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country.”

The former BJP leader’s offensive comments during a TV debate earlier this month, sparked massive protests in India and several Gulf countries summoned Indian diplomats to issue severe reprimands. On Tuesday, a tailor in Udaipur, Kanhaiya Lal, who had backed Nupur Sharma in a social media post, was murdered on camera by two men who said they were “avenging an insult to Islam”.

“We saw the debate on how she was incited. But the way she said all this and later says she was a lawyer it is shameful. She should apologise to the whole country,” said Justice Surya Kant.

Ms Sharma had requested the court to transfer to Delhi the FIRs filed against her across the country, citing threats to her life.  Regarding not using her real name in the plea the lawyer said she had not used her name on the petition because of the threats. “She faces threats or she has become a security threat,” the judges quipped.

The apex court rejected Nupur Sharma’s argument on “equal treatment” and “no discrimination”.

“But when you file FIRs against others, they are immediately arrested but when it’s against you nobody has dared to touch you,” the judges said.
