  • Taj Group of Hotels celebrates the 175th Birth Anniversary of their beloved Mr. Jamsetji Tata

    Mumbai :  The Taj Group of Hotels today celebrates the visionary Jamsetji Tata’s 175th birth anniversary with an Mr. Ratan Tata inaugurating the art exhibition held by one of the hotel’s oldest employees - Mr. Newton Thomas D’Souza at Taj Mahal Palace today to commemorate Mr. Jamsetji Tata's 175th birth anniversaryart exhibition inaugurated by Mr. Ratan Tata. The exhibition showcased 36 works of art of one of Taj’s oldest employees – Mr. Newton Thomas D’Souza.

    With over 33 years of service to the Tata Group, Newton D’Souza is currently the Manager (Food & Beverage Services) at The Taj Mahal Palace with an illusively exquisite artistic flair and has been painting on glass for a quarter of a century. Newton’s works have been displayed at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre and the Tata offices in Mumbai and Jamshedpur among other venues. Newton has also held solo exhibitions at Bajaj Art Gallery (in 1996) and Jehangir Art Gallery (in 2000) to name a few.

    Inspired by Pope Francis’s saying “Money must Serve not Rule,” Newton’s personal tribute to Mr. Jamsetji Tata is a very generous donation of 50% of his proceeds to support underprivileged cancer patients at the Tata Medical Center in Kolkata. “It is my birthday gift to Mr. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata on the occasion of his 175th birthday”, says Mr. D’souza “He has taught me the importance of values and to live life ethically and with purpose”, he adds.

    A survey conducted by the Indian Cancer Registry revealed that maximum numbers of specific cancers come from the Eastern and North Eastern parts of India. Keeping the same in mind, the Tata Group gifted Rs. 350 crore for a non -profit, world-class cancer hospital in Kolkata. With over 55 highly trained specialist doctors in India and abroad as well as some of the most contemporary equipment, this center has treated close to 28000 patients till date. The Tata Medical Center hospital currently houses 167 beds and is looking at expanding its reach to accommodate a larger number of patients who require urgent attention.

    The Taj has always been known for its carefully built art collection which includes Indian masters and contemporary talent, Indian folk arts and European adornments. The hotel brings together different styles by blending contemporary Indian influences with the drama of traditional architecture. Thus, making this exhibition the perfect way to celebrate such an auspicious occasion and celebrate the legacy – that is Taj.
