  • Telugu music sees a 2.1x increase in online streaming in 2018: Hungama Music Sound of Fame Report

    Hyderabad: Hungama Music, one of the leading music streaming platforms in the country owned by Hungama Digital Media, today released the first Sound of Fame report revealing the most popular songs as deducedfrom the usage trends observed on its platform. Users in Telangana and Andhre Pradesh state spent 2.3x more time streaming music in 2018 as compared to 2017. At the same time, streaming of Telegu songs increased by 2.1x in 2018 from 2017. Four tracks in the top 10 most streamed Telugu songs list were from Ram Charan and Samantha Akkineni’s smash hit, Rangasthalam while Mahesh Babu and Kiara Advani starrer blockbuster, Bharat Ane Nenu and Krishnarjuna Yudham starring Nani and Anupama Parameswaran, had 2 songs each in the top 10 list.

    Speaking about the report, Neeraj Roy, Founder and CEO, Hungama Digital Media said, “The growth seen in music streaming in the last few years has made it easier for the creative minds to take their music to consumers who in turn have convenient access to content. This has created an environment that allows users to explore and sample music from a virtually unlimited buffetof content. We are certain that the coming few years will see consumers appreciate digital music in even higher numbers.”

    A Mega Year for Telegu Music and Artistes

    Renowned composer Devi Sri Prasad had 6 tracks to his credit in the top 10 most streamed Telugu songs list. This includesRangamma Mangamma (Rangasthalam) – the most streamed Telegu song of the year. Other songs to his credit includeYentha Sakkagunnave, Jigelu Rani and Ranga Ranga Rangasthalana, all from Rangasthalam, at number 2, 5 and 6 respectively. Besides these, he also composed the music for Bharat Ane Nenu and I Don’t Know (both from the movie Bharat Ane Nenu) which became the 4th and 9th most streamed Telegu tracks of the year. The song, I Don’t Know also marked the Telegu singing debut of Farhan Akhtar. Hip Hop Tamizha was also appreciated for his compositions in Krishnarjuna Yuddham; songs Dhaari Choodu and I Wanna Fly from the movie secured the 3rd and 7th spot in the top 10 list.

    The Year of Remakes for Bollywood Music

    With 25% contribution to Bollywood music’s consumption, the year 2018 can easily be called The Year of Remakes. Sung by Neha Kakkar, Dilbar (Satyamev Jayate), 2018’s top song was a remake of the iconic 1999 track itself. Other remakes that did well include Aankh Maare (Simbaa), Tere Bin (Simbaa), Dekhte Dekhte (Batti Gul Meter Chalu), Urvashi (Yo Yo Honey Singh), Proper Patola (Namaste England), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (Hate Story IV)and Dil Chori (Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety), among others.

    Hindi Charts Ruled by Dance Numbers

    The top 10 Hindi songs list of Hungama Music Sound of Fame Report 2018 features a staggering 5 dance numbers. These include the top song of the year, Dilbar (Satyamev Jayate), Bom Diggy Diggy (Batti Gul Meter Chalu), Kamariya (Stree), Tareefan (Veere Di Wedding) and Akh Lad Jaave (Loveyatri).

    Increasing Affinity Towards International Music and Hip Hop

    Availability of international content is making it easier for Indians to discover and explore non-native content as well. Hip hop fever appeared to have gripped the listeners of English music with consumption for the genre nearly doubling since 2017. Maroon 5’s Girls Like You emerged the top English song of 2018; DJ Snake’s Taki Taki and Drake’s In My Feelings grabbed the second and third spot respectively.
