  • The owner of world’s largest thyroid testing company Thyrocare’s MD, Dr. Velumani shared his rags to riches story to FICCI Ladies

    Hyderabad : Scientist and Entrepreneur, Founder of Thyrocare Technologies, a chain of diagnostic and preventive care labs Dr. Velumani to spoke to FICCI Ladies on “ A Successful Romance with Risk” here in Hyderabad on Friday at Park Hyatt, Banjara Hills.

    Thyrocare took the Indian bourses by storm when its initial public offering (IPO) was oversubscribed 73 times in the year 2016.

     

    My village is my university he started the talk. Those who see poverty in life see success. So, poverty is very important in life he said. Make mistakes so you lear fast, he added.

     

    He told his audience to be frugal. Burn calories, not salaries, he added. Petrol and diabetes has direct relation. Cars bring heart attack. So have stamina. Stamina is your new currency, he added.

     

    He advised audience that if you take less cost for your product or service, you get more he said.

     

    Shift Chemist to Laboratory Assistant at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), he founded thyroid testing laboratory, Thyrocare, in 1996 with Rs two lakh PPF money from BARC. He introduced a franchisee model. Thyrocare became the largest thyroid testing laboratory, with a network of more than 2500 Franchisees in 1000 cities across India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Middle East.

     

    From earning 25 paise as monthly emoluments, Dr. Velumani is the proud boss of his company whose turnover is over Rs 350crore. The man who slept in VT Railway station for three days when he first moved to Mumbai, today he turned his dreams into a company, whose worth is Rs 4000crore.

     

    Speaking about his net worth, Dr Velumani says every six years I add a zero to my net worth.

     

    Talking about services of the company he says, “Thyroid now sounds like Android”.

     

    I was unsuccessful in 50 job interviews. Explaining the struggle he had gone through in securing job without experience, he decided then that he wouldn’t ever ask experience in recruits. How can you have experience without job he asks? And adds, that is why, we don’t hire experienced. We only prefer “fresh and poor” he informs.

     

    The company has zero debt. I was afraid of borrowing. My life always revolved around ration card, rather than credit cards, he shared.

     

    English is a language and not a knowledge he says. Referring politicians he said people don’t vote if they address them in English. It is exactly opposite in case of employment. No employer gives you a job, if you can’t speak English”, what an irony he says.

     

    Commenting realities of life he said, I am 59 years old and young. Warren Buffet is 89 years old. I have a long way to go he adds.

     

    Comfort Zone is dangerous zone. Poverty is the most powerful luxury in life. I have been working for 16 hours for the 16 hours, explaining his and journey, he added.

     

    “Those days I had too much hunger, but no food. Today, I have too much food and no hunger,” he says, rather philosophically.

     

    “I was the only student who did not get the group photo in Class 11, because I could not pay Rs 2 for the photo,” he remarks.

     

    I always keep stress far away from me throughout my life. The only time I had stress was at the time of death of my wife.
