Nomad Internet offers WiFi service for people that live off the beaten track (whether for a day or a decade). The company got its start in the great state of Texas in June 2017. Its founders, Jessica and Jaden Garza, began with a simple problem: the WiFi in RV parks was anything but reliable.
The initial goal was to improve services for people one park at a time. Their first installation was in Johnson City, a small city of just over 1,600 people. From there, the company grew in popularity thanks to the innovative solutions of the Garzas, which kept costs down without compromising the quality of the wifi. We’ll look at the story of the company and how they turned a single complaint into a business that now connects tens of thousands of customers to their favorite devices.
The Very Beginning
Jaden Garza saw just how a lack of WiFi could influence how people lived their lives. For people who live in an RV all-year round, they need the internet to accomplish any number of tasks, such as scheduling doctor appointments, taking online classes, or checking email. However, it’s also important for vacationers to have reliable services as well.
While ostensibly in the Great Outdoors to disconnect from technology, vacationers still rely on internet services for news, directions, recommendations, and entertainment. If they can’t access what they need, it can be frustrating at best and dangerous at worst. It was clear that RV park owners recognized the need for intervention as well, which is why many jumped at the chance to improve their services.
The Garzas were first a presence in Johnson City, otherwise known as the site of their very first installation. However, it didn’t take long for them to move to Seguin, TX for their second job. The Seguin RV park was a community of 50 full-time RVers. The number of people on site made it difficult for people to stay connected to what was already a weak signal. Even when people did manage to connect to the service, the connection was exceptionally slow.
On the second time around, Jaden Garza decided to use LTE technology, a move that opened up an additional 40 megabytes per second to the RV park. This additional bandwidth was a huge boon for everyone, particularly when you consider just how long the RVers had been starved for WiFi. LTE is a household name these days, but back in 2017, it was still relatively new. Jaden Garza was thrilled at the results, as it was a practical solution for those in RV parks that yielded incredible service.
Working with the Girl Scouts of America
In 2018, the Garzas were contacted by the Girl Scouts of America (GSA) at San Jacinto. This was a huge success for Jessica and Jaden Garza, and a clear sign that the pair had built up a solid reputation in their industry. The Girl Scouts asked the two to find a solution for their park, one that would be as affordable as it was reliable.
It should be noted that the Garzas weren’t the first people that they contacted. In fact, GSA had already received several estimates from competitors to service the park. These estimates were truly outrageous, with some going over $100,000 to outfit the park with WiFi. Jaden Garza decided to negotiate a licensed LTE technology kit with BaiCells Technology, which brought down costs and delivered LTE technology to the entire site.
Jaden was one of the very first owners of an LTE Base Station from BaiCells, and this distinction earned him credit for his ability to think outside the box. While other competitors were content to stick with traditional solutions, Garza looked to emerging technology instead. His ability to adapt his business based on rapidly changing tech industry is what made it possible for Nomad to get a solid start right out of the gate.
From B2B to B2C
At the beginning of 2020, Nomad Internet decided to move away from business-to-business operations, so they could work with the consumer directly. Jaden Garza determined that he could provide services to people using LTE technology, which had thankfully come a very long way since he first used it in 2017. His business model was similar to that which he had used when he was still working directly with RV parks, but adjusted to work directly with individuals and families who lived in rural communities and homes.
Nomad Internet was able to bridge the gap that other service providers couldn’t because they didn’t rely on fiber lines like their competitors did. With the help of Nomad, customers could now access the internet from their devices in much the same way their cell phones were able to access the internet. The demand for their services increased so much that they Nomad was able to hire their first full-time employees.
Nomad Customers Double — And Then Double Again
In the fall of 2020, Nomad Internet decided to leave their shared office space and move to a new office building. The private office space in New Braunfels, TX was a turning point and reward for the team’s hard work and dedication. The step up from the previous location felt like a symbol of success, particularly when you consider how much ground work was laid by the Garzas since 2017.
The extra space made it possible to take on new staff and bring all of their team under one roof. Owners and employees alike wasted no time making the building feel like their own space. That same month, the company hit a milestone of 10,000 customers. In just a few months, they had managed to double their customer base!
The drastic influx of customers and new location may have been a cornerstone achievement, but it turned out to be a drop in the bucket for the company. By July of 2021, the company had reached another record of 20,000 customers. It should come as no surprise that they needed to expand their offices yet again.
In March of 2022, the Garzas moved into a standalone building, one located on 10 acres of land. The walking trails and greenspaces that surround the building give employees a chance to get out, brainstorm, hold meetings, or just plain soak up the sun. Nomad Internet is also remodeling the entire building to fit the needs of the team, so they can continue giving their customers the best in service for an affordable price.
