Thiruvananthapuram : KIMSHEALTH Cancer Centre organised a medical conference, ‘Thyroid CA Update 2024,’ focusing on the key clinical topics in the management of Thyroid cancer. The conference led by Dr. Narayanan R, renowned Surgical Oncologist, discussed the critical facets of thyroid cancer management, addressing prevalent issues such as the overdiagnosis of thyroid nodules and exploring emerging technologies in surgeries, including robotic thyroidectomy. More than 150 participants from all over India attended the day-long program who made each session interactive by their thoughtful questions and comments.
The conference was convened as recognition of Kerala’s alarming position as the second highest state in thyroid cancer incidence within India. Studies have suggested a potential link between this trend and over diagnosis, driven by the increased utilisation of imaging techniques, which picks up nodules that might not have been diagnosed otherwise. The forthcoming release of the American Thyroid Association’s thyroid cancer management guidelines in 2024 is anticipated to provide further insights into this paradox of over diagnosis.
Notable speakers include Dr. Gouri Pantvaidya from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. Arvind Krishnamoorthy and Dr. Venktesh V from Cancer Institute Adyar, Chennai, Dr. Sandeep Nayak from Fortis Hospital Bangalore, Dr. M J Paul from CMC Vellore, Dr. Bipin T Varghese from RCC Trivandrum – shared their expertise and invaluable perspectives during the event. Case-based panels and debates witnessed lively discussions of the practical aspects of treatment in real-world settings.
